On Sunday 31st May 2009 Kamran Ali sensei, the Loughborough instructor successfully defended his all range black belt title at the British Jiu Jiu (all styles) Championships, hosted at the national Judo centre , Wolverhampton University. He comfortably moved through the early rounds decimating all opponents with strong striking and grappling, regulalry finishing with his trade mark arm bar on the floor. Yet another gold medal for his collection. Other notable seishin success came from Jack Skinner (Leicester uni) who won silver in the green to blue belt continuous fighting and Karen Williamson who took the silver in the green to blue belt random attacks. Team coach and cheif instructor Dr Richard Catterick said 'I am very proud of the teams performance, even those who didn't medal on the day showed real heart against tough opposition. Once again we showed that the seishin way is the way, be it in competition or self defence.'

Gasshuku 2007 – Gower Peninsula, South Wales

Picture the scene: a Samurai warrior rouses his troops for a charge across open ground at an opposing force. The troops cover the ground quickly, weapons raised as their leader crashes through the line of the opposition like the tip of an arrow, the enemy seemingly scattering under the force of the charge as weapons clash. Suddenly though, they close the line again, cutting the leader off from his troops as he’s surrounded by six skilled warriors, each striking towards him with their weapons in a formation such that there is no danger of them injuring each other in such close quarters. The leader falls and the six warriors lead a flanking movement, enveloping the now leader-less force from all sides…..there will only be one outcome to this battle….

A scene from Japanese history ? No –in actual fact this all took place at Three Cliffs Beach, Gower Peninsula, Wales, on August 2nd 2007 and was one of Catterick Soke’s lessons in Samurai Battlefield Tactics as part of the Seishin Mizu Ryu Annual Gasshuku, a week-long camp where seventy Jutsuka converged from all over the UK for some pretty intense training.

Arriving on the evening of Friday 27th July, we plunged into an intense weekend of training, averaging 6 hours training per day. That said, whilst some of us were spark out asleep by midnight, some hardy souls were drinking long into the night and still had the energy to be up and around by 8am each day. Wakey Wakey Pads on Sunday morning was the perfect antidote to any hangover and an experience I will remember for quite some time even in my sober state…. Over the next 5 days, we experienced an awesome mix of sessions, from syllabus training in locks, throws and groundwork through to Tai Chi, Hanbo and Jo Jutsu sessions. Even the rest day was a stimulating change as the group went rock climbing & bouldering in the Brecon Beacons whilst a few of us went off on an 8 miles waterfall walk.

Catterick Soke and his supporting Sensei expertly managed a slick, full schedule – from the kitchen crew rotation to ensure that we were all well fed, to the pure entertainment of Ninja basketball, Kabbadi and the legendary Myths of Martial Arts session.

Talking towards the end of the week about the highlight and the lowpoint of the week: the highlight for me was the weapons training but I couldn’t actually think of a lowpoint (well, apart from having to share a dorm with the cast from Star Wars)….all told it was a top week and an experience that everyone should have at some point along their jiu jitsu path.

Special Ground work Seminar

Saturday 27th Jan at the Exe Centre dojo

This course was aimed at improving groundwork skills. Catterick Sensei has been training with the head of the Gracie family's (Rickson Gracie) UK represenatative Dean Taylor for over seven years .

This is what happened Saturday morning, in the depths of January. The allure of learning the ways of the legendary Gracies was enough to overcome any minor external interruptions such as the time, the day and the temperature, which would only have become issues, had the session been a let down. Fortunately enough, and not unsurprisingly, it wasn’t, and after a great deal of sweat, several jiu jitsuka emerged, definitely more competent on the floor than those that had entered. The two hour session was packed with escapes from many of the common holds practiced in jiu jitsu and other martial arts which practice ground fighting in some form. One of the main things that was learnt from the session however, was a taste of how to work your opponent, relatively slowly, but almost inevitably towards their defeat, a style made famous by the Gracies. So would I and the other jiu jitsuka attend another groundwork session with Soke? The answer is simple. He is bound to see the same faces, and quite a few more at the next one.
